You may not know that in my 'other life' I own a working organic farm near Merrickville, Ontario. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and meats and deliver them right to our customer.
This represents a three-way management challenge – managing production, managing deliveries, and managing customers accounts.
I recently found software to help us manage those challenges, and serendipitously it's based on Software as a Service (SaaS), just like our own PracticalPRS tool.
I chose this particular service for a few reasons. First, it was designed by actual farmers who understand the business; apparently there are more computer programmer/organic farmer/consultants out there besides me ;-)
Second, because SAAS software doesn't need to be installed, I can get up and running within a week – including configuration and training! Compare that to the 'never-ending story' that is your typical software deployment.
Third, since the software is based in the 'Cloud', I can access the tool from anywhere; I can check 'pick and pack' lists in my processing shed, and I can confirm customer orders and payment status right at the customer's door (using a tablet).
Fourth, I can give access to the tool to other farms that supply me some produce; the tool manages our joint 'inventory'.
Fifth, I can also give (limited) access to my customers, so they can provide a degree of 'self-care' i.e. placing orders, informing me when they will be on vacation and don't want deliveries.
Sixth, I am always working with the latest version of the software, no upgrade or 'patch' required.
Seventh, despite the fact I am 'technically competent', I appreciate the fact that don't have to take on maintaining this software; support is included.
Eighth, I pay for this software based on a percentage of my sales each month. NO huge upfront capital cost to acquire it.
The point of all this (and I do have one) is to demonstrate that SaaS is a very real and growing trend. That's why we chose this platform for PracticalPRS.

I tell people that as a management consultant and an organic farmer, I am occasionally required to shovel horse poop in both my jobs. But the benefits of Software as a Service are 'shovel-free'.
